The Art of John Ward CBE RA

We are privileged to watch as John Ward paints fellow artist Gerald Norden, together with a student painter, in his studio in Kent, and then travels to Rome to draw and sketch. "Painting painters makes you paint better," he comments while making the preliminary charcoal drawing on canvas and, filmed over a period of four days, we see the portrait develop from initial washes of colour to the final brushstrokes. A wonderful mixture of incisive remarks, advice, reminiscences and wit accompanies this rare insight into the painting process of this distinguished artist. In Rome, which he visits regularly, we are treated to some beautifully sensitive pen and ink and watercolour studies which perfectly capture a sense of history and atmosphere.
